As we roll into fall, we are excited to resume our ORIGINS series with Chef Spike Gjerde at Artifact Coffee. Three years into our series and we thought it would be a good time to take a deep dive into the economics of buying and sourcing locally.
We are thrilled to announce a two-fer, two-parter deal! If you purchase tickets to both ORIGINS (one week apart from each other), a ticket for both events will be $120. For one event, it’s our normal price of $65 which always includes drinks, appetizers, dinner and conversation. And if you’ve attended any of our ORIGINS, you know we always sell out so don’t procrastinate on buying your tickets.
Our two-parter will begin on Thursday, September 20th with a look at sourcing and buying locally from both the retail perspective as well as the farmer’s market point of view. We are lucky to have two panelists who have extensive experience in this arena: Scott Nash, the CEO of Mom’s Market (we are lucky to have 2 “Moms” in my geographic area) and Tracy Ward, the Executive Director of the Easton Economic Development Corporation and Chesapeake Harvest. Chesapeake Harvest “envisions a regional food production and distribution system that increases employment on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and contributes to a vibrant regional economy, with enhanced food production, distribution infrastructure, food security and the preservation of farms.”
One week later on Thursday, September 27th, we will flip the conversation to the farmers’ point of view. We are delighted to welcome Dave Liker, farmer/owner of Gorman Farms in Howard County. Dave has developed a large CSA (community supported agriculture) program and can highlight the economic forces at work on his farm. Accompanying Dave will be Mark Toigo, owner/farmer of Toigo Orchards in Shippensburg, PA. Mark sells both to Whole Foods and other retailers as well as through at least 10 farmer’s markets so his perspective is unique.
I look forward to seeing you, hopefully on the 20th and 27th but I’ll give you a pass if you can only make one! Tickets are available here: http://artifactcoffee.
